As time goes on...

I have neglected this blog for the past few months. I started it just to test blogger.com and then thought it would be nice to write something every now and then. I come back thinking that it would be nice to write but at this point in time I just have no time. Yes, Kevin Rudd is a hot issue at the moment given the pending election and no, nothing will make me vote for anybody other than Honest John BUT as much as the free medium of the blogsphere attracts me I just have nothing profound or remotely interesting to say, I will though. Summer is coming and I want to write again. Not like on this blog, not like I ever have in my life. I just want to write some good stuff.

You Tube is a bandwidth hog!

One feature I would really like You Tube to implement is a button to stop downloading the rest of a video. My internet provider is Bigpond and I get a minuscule 12 GB of data usage (uploads and downloads) a month. I'm forever hitting refresh to stop You Tube from downloading the rest of a video.

So here's a tip for the world's best video sharing site, give us a button to stop downloading the rest of a playing video.

Kevin Rudd's Strip Club Experience

The recent news of Kevin Rudd and his strip club experience while on a taxpayer funded trip to New York has created a lot of hype amongst the Australian media. While most of the time I try to read between the lines when it comes to what the media reports, I cannot help but to acknowledge the fact that a married man who wishes to be the face of Australia and lead the country as Prime Minister is tarnishing the entire image of Australians.

While this news may not have reached anywhere overseas I still think it reflects badly on Rudd, the ALP and Australia. Yes, strip clubs exist and they always have. Notions of the adult industry being the "oldest profession" hold true, but the media beat up on this event is justified. I don't wish his career to be over, but he should suffer a fair penalty issued by the people of Australia in his election campaign.

On the other hand people do make mistakes and this is quite obviously one of Kevin's (he doesn't seem like the type to be a regular at a strip club) and they should be forgiven. He claims to have apologised to his wife the next day after revealing his adventures saying he told her he was a "goose". If this is true, he has gained some credibility. However at this moment I am reluctant to believe what he says.

Eve geese shouldn't be put in the same boat as Kevin Rudd because even they are smart enough to know not to meander into a strip club on a tax payer funded trip without the wife or the wife's consent. Kevin Rudd you are a silly man and I question whether your younger image posses the maturity required to run a country. If your past is yet to reveal more comparable qualities, you might as well hand it to Johnny right now.

Some news reports on Kevin's night out:
ABC - Strip club revelations 'unlikely' to lose Rudd many votes
Courier Mail - Kevin Rudd strip club

A shameless plug

This is a shameless plug for an article I wrote last year. I still seem to see quite a lot of people asking how to remove the camera shutter sound on the Sony Ericsson K750i so I have decided to hopefully pull more traffic to the page my article is written on!

So if you are looking to get rid of that sound that drives me crazy and you own an Australian (CID49) K750i this page is your answer!

Optical Illusions

This is an interesting picture I found while surfing the internet today. I like optical illusions and this must be one of the better ones I've ever seen. So with this picture the woman firstly appeared to me as if she was spinning clockwise.

To make her appear to spin the other way, focus on her shadow at the bottom and then eventually your eyes should adjust and see her moving in the opposite direction, for me that was now anti-clockwise.

Another way to make her change direction if your really desperate is to just imagine her spinning the other way with your eyes closed and then open them!

The Terrible Telemarketer

Telemarketing is a hot topic. Everybody hates them it seems, but I don't agree. Firstly, to put this into perspective I work for a big telecommunications provider, yes, in a call centre. So I might begin by looking at it from my perspective.

Telemarketing jobs are easy to get, you do the required full time training and then get out on the phones. Most people quit, leave or sometimes get fired in the first two weeks. The figures would be amazing if there was a study done. Employee turnover is huge! Some continue, few succeed and out of the 'training groups' that go through, sometimes nobody will last more than a month.

However the ones that do stay aren't there because they are desperate for a job. It is because they can handle it. People hang up on you and constantly say 'not interested' and it can get quite depressing. Only those that can handle the monotony and don't take it personally can stay. Most new employees leave by choice.

So the environment is crap, but why do I stay? Money. I make more money in this job that I can anywhere else. I can work while I study at University because the hours are flexible and I can get as many or as few as I like. The base rate of pay is up there with the best with the exception of basically nothing. The commission ensures that I'm getting paid the most I can. However, this also means I have to put some effort in but it is worth it. Some weeks it works out I'm earning upwards of $35 an hour. All to just sit there and talk on the phone.

So in short, don't abuse telemarketers as losers who need to get a life, we have it better than you. We don't endure abuse for nothing, and in the many months I've worked in the call centre, I haven't been abused once. People get angry, but no abuse.

BUT, the lack of abuse is related to what sort of calls I make. I call customers who already have products and sell other products at bundled rates and so forth. Basically, if you're in the market for what I'm selling, I'm useful to you. If you're not in the market for what I'm selling, but you like a good deal, I'm good for you. However, sometimes you end up buying things you don't want from me because if you wanted it you would already have it.

This is where the negative side of telemarketing comes into play. Yes it is bloody annoying receiving calls you do not want, but what about the one's that truly do save you money. The fact is people buy because the product is good, or appears to be good. Not because the salesperson is good. They present, the customer decides if they want to buy or not, if the salesperson pitches the product well they increase the chance of the customer buying the product but ultimately if you don't like getting the calls STOP BUYING OVER THE PHONE! Large companies wouldn't engage in direct marketing such as telemarketing if it didn't yield results. That's why the industry is here to stay.

However, if you don't like the calls but you care about the feelings of telemarketers (I don't see why you should, but if you are that type of person) you have two options: hang up immediately, or buy what they are selling. Hang up and stop wasting their time where they could be making sales. Or just buy it and cool off later, YOU ALWAYS HAVE A COOLING OFF PERIOD*!

Otherwise, if you are an arsehole and who can deny it isn't a lot of fun, stay on the phone for 2+ minutes and then hang up. However, we get paid to sit on the phone, you don't. That's the bottom line. We do it for the money, not because we like it. Telemarketers might enjoy what they do in some cases, but only for the money. Like I mentioned above, we can take the constant rejection it doesn't phase a telemarketer if you throw them back. We just move on to the next person.

So business likes telemarketers because it makes them money, I get paid, and the people who do buy products most of the time appreciate being called. Some people even thank me for calling even if they don't buy.

So if you don't like telemarketers my advice is get on a Do Not Call list because it stops the calls eventually. And as I said before hang up on the telemarketers or buy their crap and cool off. It wastes money for the company sending information in the mail, processing things, etc. It means they pay commission (if their pay structure doesn't prevent this) to the agents and they win floor incentives, so they like you. The industry gets flooded with bogus sales and it becomes less effective.

However, the bottom line is telemarketing is good for enough people to make it worthwhile. I make money so I like it and I'm not complaining. But don't take your anger out on agents, it a waste of your emotions and time. If an agent is rude to you or harasses you by all means, knock yourself out, waste their time. But ultimately you achieve nothing by playing tricks or being rude telemarketers don't care. So hang up and quit depriving other people of their love of buying useless crap they don't need!

*Not in QLD or WA and not on some products but just ask and make sure, then buy! I don't know why I encourage this but more sales looks good even if they do end up not being fulfilled!

Windows Vista doesn't work!

Bold statement yes, incorrect? No! I have got myself a copy of Windows Vista and loaded it onto my Asus V6000 (I think that's the model number). I usually expect new software to do something better than previous versions and when Microsoft spends $6 billion on developing ONE piece of software I expect it to be good.

The improvements were not surprising, Vista looks better, sounds better and has more functionality and features than XP. I don't particularly like the side bar but that is down to personal preference and the fact that I don't have a wide screen laptop. Things like the search function from the Start button are nice integrations, however they lack the ability to be customized to use other software such as Google search.

Undoubtedly, Windows Aero is the biggest improvement - and I use that word cautiously - over XP. The shiny task bar and glistening buttons are all rather flashy and I must say, nice, but the amount of system resources it uses to produce these graphics is astonishing. If you're looking for a non-technical description of this well I have one. My laptop is running hotter than ever before! Then fan which is stupidly noisy is now ALWAYS on when it used to come on intermittently with XP. After several months of using Aero I've now switched it off to try and stop the fan from coming on.

Coming back to the search function, put simply, Google Desktop Search is better. Hit Ctrl twice and away you go, far better than the Microsoft alternative. Perhaps a little cooperation here would yield good results?

So I must say my expectations of Windows Vista were not met. I would consider it a good improvement over Windows XP, however it fails in one crucial area. It is a very poor upgrade. My hardware does not handle it well and it makes it disappointing. The Asus V6000 is fantastic with Windows XP but it is obviously not made for Vista and I understand this but I feel a new operating system should cope with older hardware a lot better than Vista does.

Now finally I just want to finish by making a comment more on the way in which Asus is providing support for this model of computer. Where is it? My Fn buttons do not work and I'm unable to find a way to make them work which is driving me crazy. If I had paid for this computer I would be angry (my old laptop of a different make broke and the retailer replaced it with this, but that's a different story)!

If anyone finds a fix for the Asus V6000 Fn buttons comment me!
